15. SOTA Activation: Prairie Dog Hill VK1/AC-039 (17 May 2015)

Andrew VK1NAM proposed to activate VK1/AC045 Prairie Dog Hill to the VK1_SOTA Mailing Group. I signed up and joined him on the 13th of September.

We drove out to the Ororral Tracking Station parking lot in the Ororral Valley and headed out towards Prairie Dog Hill around 07:30.

It was a beautiful crisp morning and there was no wind. We reached the turnoff into the bush after about 90 minutes, having averaged about 3.4 Km/h over the 5.15 Km of vehicle tracks.

Initially there was very little Wattle scrubs to bash through so the going was fairly easy for the first 750 meters, over short grass, fern and gum trees. Gradually the slope increased and the scrub appeared.

Then our speed dropped way down to about 15 minutes per 100m. Not only was there wattle to wade through, similar to that of Ororral Hill, but we also had to make our way over or round huge granite tors.

We spent 90 minutes on the first 5.2 Km and then another 86 minutes on the last 1.7 Km, so about 3 hours from the Ororral car park to the top, 6.9 Km in total. By comparison, on our return trip, we did the scrub bashing bit in 78 minutes and the bit on the road in 79 minutes, for a total return trip time of 2 hours 38 minutes.

We were on the summit slightly after our advertised alert but we got going and called CQ at 10:35, about 30 minutes later than what we intended.

Special Permissions or Arrangements

No special arrangements are necessary. All access is via public roads and Prairie Dog Hill is on Commonwealth land.

Summit Information

Prairie Dog Hill summit is 1330 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 2 SOTA activation points, plus a 3 point winter bonus. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44kj.

The summit consists of one big flat granite plate, with a convenient granite table perfect for packing out your gear. There is no straightforward spot to erect a squid pole antenna mast, but there is a smallish gum tree that could be used to hoist up a wire antenna as high as maybe 4-5 meters. The north-western side of the summit is fairly open to the horizon, except for a big granite tor that keeps watch.

The Mt. Ginini Repeater is within easy range of a HT and rubber ducky antenna.

Contacts Made

Andrew VK1NAM and I took turns in a tag-team activation arrangement. Initially I had the Squid Pole set-up with the tape measure Yagi and we were hoping to make a few quick contacts with my FT817.

Right between us and Canberra, was a few summits as high or higher than our 1330 meters and these interfered somewhat with our attempts. We switched to Andrew’s FT857 and retried with 10 Watts which was more successful.

We also found that using the tape measure Yagi in the horizontal plane was more effective. Despite having the tape measure Yagi, VHF conditions were still a bit of a challenge if one only had 5 Watts: for example one QSO with Grant VK4JAZ/1 couldn’t be completed and when we retried about 5 minutes later, suddenly we were exchanging 5/9 and 5/8 signal reports. In the end I managed 8 VHF contacts on 2 meters in a combination of FM and SSB.

Apart from local VK1 chasers, I also made contact with Steve VK7CW in Tassie, Robert VK2XXM in Grafton, Mike VK3XL in Victoria, Robin VK5TN in Mt. Gambier, Peter VK3YE on Chelsea Beach with a 2 Watt transceiver, Scott VK2IF in NSW, Ron VK3VBI in Victoria and Rick VK4RF in Queensland.

14. SOTA Party on 30 August Part 3: Mt. Cowangerong VK2/ST-001

On 30 August a number of VK1, VK2 and VK3 SOTA Operators participated in a SOTA party.
Operators tried to activate at least one summit, or if they weren’t able to get out on the day, to chase those who were.

I decided to do 3 summits towards the east of Canberra, two of which would attract the 3-point winter bonus.
I chose Mt. Gillamatong close to Braidwood, Mt. Palerang about *mmm* Km from Braidwood and Mt. Cowangerong, the location of the Captains Flat BOM Weather Radar.

Mt. Cowangerong is a drive-up summit which means… you drive up. No bush bashing. Just the finish I needed after Mt. Paltering! I drove back towards Braidwood and jumped onto the Cooma road before turning onto the Captains Flat road. I have heard afterwards that there is a better road to get to Cowangerong from Palerang but I have not looked into it yet.

The drive was pretty uneventful, the highlight was driving over bridges with timber as the road surface. I have never seen that before!

The Captains Flat road is a pretty good unsealed road and I got to the Cowangerong turn-off in no time. That lead to about 2 Km of wheel tracks up the hill, to a clearing on the summit where the BOM radar towers over everything.

I walked about 70 meters away from the buildings and broke out my “gentlemen’s activation kit” as Andrew VK1DA refers to my Helinox Table and Chair. These are great, only 1.5 Kg for both of them and being able to sit down at a table in the bush while you operate is pure indulgence.

I was nearly set-up when I was joined on the summit by Paul VK1ATP who drove out from Canberra for the activation.

Summit Information

Mt. Cowangerong’s summit is 1364 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 8 SOTA activation points, plus a 3 point winter bonus. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44si. There are a heaps of trees on the summit, blocking the horizon. Surprisingly I found no radio interference on HF but there were a few birdies on 2 Meters.

Contacts Made

Paul and I operated our two stations on the hill for about 90 minutes before it got too cold to bother. In that time, I managed 8 contacts in total, 4 on 2 meters and 4 on 40 meters.

I got text messages from Andrew VK1DA and Roald VK1MTS, respectively on Mt. Tumorrama and Spring Hill,  who suggested we catch up on 2 Meters SSB.
This was the first day I used a new Tape Measure Yagi I had made and it wasn’t used in anger up to that point.

I was keen to try and managed to get Andrew on 144.2 SSB, whereafter I also made contact with Matt “Mission Control” VK1MA,  Roald VK1MTS and Gerard VK2IO on The Peak.
I switched to 40 meters and managed a few more with VK3AFW, VK4HA, VK4RF and VK4DI. Although the conditions were very depressed, at the end of the day, I was being heard 5/8 in North Queensland.

For interest's sake, here is a picture of the 144.2SSB activation between Me on Cowangerong, Andrew iDA on Tumorrama, Roald 1MTS on Spring Hill and Gerard 2IO on The Peak. From Andrew to me it was 103 Km, From Roald to me it was 74 Km and to Gerard form me it was 92 Km. But between Gerard and Roald the distance was 150 Km!

13. SOTA Party on 30 August Pt. 2: Mt. Palerang VK2/ST-009

Part 2: Mt. Palerang (30 August 2015)


On 30 August a number of VK1, VK2 and VK3 SOTA Operators participated in a SOTA party.
Operators tried to activate at least one summit, or if they weren’t able to get out on the day, to chase those who were.

I decided to do 3 summits towards the east of Canberra, two of which would attract the 3-point winter bonus. I chose Mt. Gillamatong close to Braidwood, Mt. Palerang about 18 Km from Braidwood and Mt. Cowangerong, the location of the Captains Flat BOM Weather Radar.

I got to the car a little late, coming down from Mt. Gillamatong. It is not too far from Braidwood, about 18Km down Bombay road, which starts very close to Gillamatong road and then onto the Hoskinstown fire trail follwed by the Mulloon fire trail.

I obviously must have enjoyed the drive too much because I managed to drive straight past my intended starting point that was based on earlier activations by Ian VK1DI and Andrew VK1NAM. Anyhoo, I knew I was in the wrong spot, but I was also running out of time - My SOTA Alert for the next activation was 45 minutes away. I pulled up next to the fire trail and got ready to get up the hill.

I had to make it up the steepest part of Mt. Palerang within 45 minutes.

I didn’t make it in time. I turned around 3 times looking for a better track but no track was really much better. They all had rocks and logs covered by fern, skree and granite tors to get over or around.
I stopped on the summit, 25 minutes late, the climb took an hour and 10 minutes.

My GPS log shows that the average gradient during my walk was 25 percent, or 1 in 4. 1 meter climb for every 4 meters horizontal. Pretty steep in itself, but on a spree slope with rocks and logs covered by fern it got pretty interesting.

I set up in a clearing about 40 meters away from the Trig Point, there is not a lot of space on the summit. Once I had the antenna set-up, (the squid pole wedged between some rocks and the antenna tossed t over some bushes), I started calling CQ.

Summit Information

Mt. Palerang’s summit is at 1234 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 8 SOTA activation points, plus a 3 point winter bonus. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44tn. There are a few trees on the summit blocking most of the horizon. There was no radio interference but the rocks de-tuned my low-hanging dipole such that I got pretty ordinary signal reports. In my rush I forgot to take a picture of my station.

Contacts Made

In the 15 minutes I managed to make 6 contacts. First with Mark VK1EM and Andrew VK1MWP on nearby South Black Range. Then I got Coll on a summit in Victoria and Gerard VK2IO on The Peaks, followed by Amanda VK3FQSO and Rex VK3OF from their QTH in Victoria.
I didn’t hang around, I was running out of time for my next activation on Mt. Cowangerong and I had a nice 45 minutes of sliding downhill to look forward to.

12. SOTA Party on 30 August Part 1: Mt. Gillamatong VK2/ST-034

On 30 August a number of VK1, VK2 and VK3 SOTA Operators participated in a SOTA party.
Operators tried to activate at least one summit, or if they weren’t able to get out on the day, to chase those who were.

I decided to do 3 summits towards the east of Canberra, two of which would attract the 3-point winter bonus. I chose Mt. Gillamatong (VK2/ST-034) close to Braidwood, Mt. Palerang (VK2/ST-009) about 18 Km from Braidwood and Mt. Cowangerong (VK2/ST-001), the location of the Captains Flat BOM Weather Radar. If  I could activate these on the day, they would bag me 28 Points.

Mt. Gillamatong

The drive to Gillamatong took about 1 hour and 15 minutes from North Canberra and as you approach Braidwood you can easily make out Mt. Gillamatong. The 1Km walk starts at the end of Gillamatong lane and takes about 45 minutes to climb 174 meters to reach the summit at an average grade of 16%.

There is one pedestrian gate to go through and an old fence to step over on your way up.
The walk up is fairly straightforward without scrub bashing or other obstacles to get over and there are nice views over the Budawang range.

On my way up I ran into Jack, an 87-year young local who walks up Gillamatong every day to call back to Sydney with a weather report. Jack is an institution, Andrew VK1NAM told me to look out for him.

I set up in a clearing about 30 meters from the Trig Point.

Summit Information

Mt. Gillamatong’s summit is at 900 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 6 SOTA activation points. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44vn. There are a few trees around the summit (no horizon view) and a few other radio towers (but no appreciable interference on HF or VHF).

I gave myself about an 30 minutes on the summit to operate and managed to make 10 contacts, all on 40 meters SSB. Six of these operators were themselves on SOTA Summits. The other contacts were with chasers from VK3, VK4 and VK5. All up a nice mix of stations.

11 SOTA Activation: Rob Roy VK1/AC-031 (17 May 2015)

11 SOTA Activation: Rob Roy VK1/AC-031 (17 May 2015)

Mt. Rob Roy is close to Tuggeranong, in the South of Canberra and is located in the Rob Roy Nature reserve. At 1099 meters, the summit is higher than any of the other “Canberra hills” - it is 209 metres higher than Mt. Majura. It was a beautiful day with no wind.

How to Get There

Access is via Orange Thorn Crescent in the suburb of Banks. There is a small clearing for parking.
Once you have parked, head uphill on the sealed road (Banks track) straight up the hill with the reservoir to your left. This section of about 500-600 metres is pretty steep, but once that is behind you the worst is over. The sealed bitumen gives way to an unsealed track, keep going uphill, following the Rob Roy Link Track signs.

Once you pass through the Rob Roy Nature reserve gate, turn right, following the track uphill.
Then, after about 1.5 Km, you veer off the main track to the left, at a rock cairn started by Andrew VK1NAM, heading further uphill. After about 10 minutes of bush walking, you should see the summit trig point surrounded by rocks.

Summit Information

Mt. Rob Roy’s summit is at 1099 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 2 SOTA activation points. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44nm. There are a few trees around the summit (no horizon view) and quite a few loose rocks. The trig point makes for a good anchor point if you use a squid pole/mast.

Contacts Made

The day was pretty special - my first DX! Conditions were great on 10 meters, such that I made 6 contacts into the USA. A special thanks to Ray W7USA, Jim N6KZ, Barry N1EU, Tom W7RV, Rich N4EX and Peter WA7JTM for chasing! The distance record probably goes to Barry N1EU who as operating from near Albany, NY. That is 16280 Km..!

According to Spaceweather.com, the Sunspot Number on the day was 103, and if the RX side had a 5-element Yagi to do the heavy lifting, then my 5-Watt FT817 and link dipole could be heard into the Western coast of the US (based on the VOACAP propagation prediction). I still shake my head in amazement at how far 5 Watts can go. It is pure magic.

Andrew 1DA and Andrew 1NAM were out and about, on Bullen Range and One Tree Hill respectively, and we managed to make easy Summit to Summit contacts. I also had contacts with Matt “Mission Control” VK1MA in Canberra and Mike VK6MB in faraway WA.

All contacts were made on 10 Meters, 28.45 SSB.

10 SOTA Activation: Orroral Hill VK1/AC-012 (05 May 2015)

 

Orroral Hill VK1/AC-012 (05 May 2015)

Andrew VK1NAM extended an invitation to the VK1_SOTA Group to join him in activating Orroral Hill. Grant VK4JAZ (who is visiting from Queensland) and I decided to take up the invitation and met up with Andrew at his QTH. According to the BOM we could expect "...thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening..." but when we arrived at the Orroral Hill Tracking Station car park in the Namadgi reserve, we only had a few spots of fog. It was going to be a perfect day.

How to Get There

Access to the summit starts at the Orroral Tracking Station parking lot. The Granite Tors walking track takes you two thirds of the way and terminates after 4 Km at the old geodetic ranging station.

This leg took the three of us 1 hour and 20 minutes of steady climbing up through the forest on a cleared footpath. We heard a few Lyrebird calls close to the little stream, 3 Km along the track. At the end of the track, we stopped at the geodetic station lookout for a breather and enjoyed the views down into the valley.

 After stopping at the lookout, the real trek began. We had 1.6 Km to go but there were no footpaths and we had a lot of scrub bashing ahead. This kind of walking reminded me more of wading through deep water because one could not see where you placed your feet and had to use your arms to part the brush ahead so that you could push your way through. We took frequent breaks and had to adjust our SOTAWATCH alert twice because of the slow going. Thankfully Andrew VK1NAM had done this before and we were forewarned: trousers, long sleeves and gloves is a must if you don't want to remain as one long read smear on the face of the hill as each shrub takes a nibble. I often had to grab handfuls of brush to steady myself as my feet slipped on invisible rocks or stumps. One could easily get into trouble here - it wouldn't be wise to do this kind of bush walking on your own.

Oftentimes the brush was so thick that I lost sight of Andrew and Grant ahead and I could only follow their sound. Without a GPS we had no way of telling up from down, let alone whether we were on track to reach the summit.

We eventually reached the top after 1 hour and 40 minutes. Yep, the 1.6 Km took us longer than the first 4 Km had! The struggle to the top proved to be worth the effort. The giant granite tors were ready to welcome us as we pushed through the last obstacles, with only clear blue skies in sight. This was the first time ever I had been on a hill like this without even a whisper of a breeze. It was perfectly still, perfectly clear. It was just perfect.

Special Permissions or Arrangements

No special permission required to access the hill.
Remember to sign the register at the trail head of the Granite Tor Walking track.
Pick your dress carefully: ...if you don't want to succumb to a thousand cuts and scrapes, wear trousers, sturdy boots, gaiters, long sleeved shirt and gloves.


Summit Information

Orroral Hill's summit is 1605 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 6 SOTA activation points. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44li. If you need shelter, you could move between the two rocks that lean against each other, forming a gateway to the other side of the summit. If you had to spend the night, this is where I would do it. If you run out of water on your way up, refill at the stream 3 Km from the Car park, just to the right of the foot path, before you get to the geodetic station.

I set up my squid pole against a bush on the western side of the summit, after passing through the gateway. There was no soil to be seen, only bare naked rock ringed by small gum trees. Andrew VK1NAM set up on the Eastern side, using a smallish tree as support for his Squid Pole whereas Grant VK4JAZ set up right on the eastern edge, overlooking the Orroral valley.

Contacts Made

After the morning's march, this day was never only going to be about the number of contacts made. Orroral Hill's solid rock floor made it very hard to find a proper match for the SOTA Beams Band Springer Antenna and Adventure Tuner that I was trying out.

Before I set up though, Andrew VK1NAM was talking on his HT to Andrew VK1DA/P, who were on Mount Majura. When he was done, I co-opted the hand held and subsequently made 4 quick Simplex contacts, first with Andrew VK1DA/P (Summit to Summit from Orroral Hill to Mount Majura), then with Ian VK1DI (Summit to Summit from Orroral Hill to Booroomba Rocks), Roald VK1FIVE in Gungahlin and an unknown caller, VK1FCBX who were operating portable on a hill in Canberra.

After the first quick contacts, I set-up the Squid Pole, band Springer with Adventure Tuner. I tried all the settings but could not get a good match on 40m. Andrew VK1NAM posted a spot for me on Sotawatch (7.160SSB) and I started calling. I was lucky to get Jeff VK1FANG, Peter VK3FPSR and Pete VK2FPMC because apparently my signal was not getting out. I got a 5/5 from Vk1FANG and a 2/2 and 3/3 from VK3FPSR and VK2FPMC respectively.

After calling for about 15 minutes without  response on 7160 MHz, I changed to 7100 where I could clearly hear Mick VK3PMG having a whale of a time in one of the parks in Victoria. Mick made 8 contacts in the 10 minutes I was trying to call him, but at no time could he hear me, nor could any of his callers, including Gerard VK2IO in Sydney.

The rocks were badly affecting the end-fed antenna/match combination.

My take-away lesson for the day was that the Band Springer / Adventure Tuner might be a good antenna / match combination when you have access to a decent ground, but out on a granite summit like this one, you wanted the solid reliability of a dipole. If you want to prep for the zombie apocalypse, pack a dipole, not an end-fed. ;-)

09 Fold Up 2 Meter Moxon

SOTA is appealing for many reasons. One of the reasons is that you need to carefully think about your kit because you will have to carry everything up to a summit (so it must be light and portable) and when you get there, it must work, come rain, wind, hail, comets or whatever (so it must be reliable).

Being of an engineering bent, I tend to easily slip into the infinite loop of "further optimization" because - to take this antenna as an example - it could always be lighter, more compact, have more gain, be simpler to set up and take down, be more robust... And this does not even touch upon the further dimension of buying new components to suit a design, or designing to suit what you already have on hand. So although it's definitely not the best 2 meter SOTA Moxon "this side of Alpha Centauri", iteration 1 works really well. To read more about how it saw the light, dive in!

Why Introduce Directionality into a SOTA Antenna?

Gain is introduced by focusing the radiation pattern. Focus reduces the beam width, and turns an omnidirectional antenna into a directional antenna, trading omnidirectionality for gain. A bit like turning a light bulb into a laser, not adding energy but concentrating what is already there. Although LASERs are cool, sometimes you rather need the diffused glow of a light bulb than the focused beam of a LASER. In the same way, there are arguments for and against focusing an antenna radiation pattern when building a SOTA antenna.

The case against it:
You never know where your callers will call from. Directionality may cost you a summit activation if someone calls from a location perpendicular to your antenna's beam, directly in your deaf spot (null). Or from behind you, if your antenna has a huge front to back ratio.

The case for it:
 When you are activating a summit out in Woop Woop, especially in Australia, you most likely want that extra bit of gain, especially if you want to make Summit 2 Summit Contacts (something that you could plan for by monitoring alerts on SOTAWATCH before you go out). Furthermore, unless your beam is as thin as a pencil, you would have no dramas if you point your antenna to the nearest big population centre. Finally, some of the SOTA Summits host radio and mobile telephone equipment and sometimes the equipment can cause quite a bit of RF interference that one may want to null out by rotating your antenna to align the noise source and your antenna's null.

In my mind, the case for more directionality won out, so I steamed ahead.

Requirements

Before I started out, I thought about what I wanted from it.
  1. A compact, light and portable 2 meter antenna with some directionality and gain.
  2. It must work with existing kit, utilise the squid pole as mast and play nice with the link dipole.
  3. Ideally it should require nothing that I do not have available.
  4. It should be robust enough to last for "a while". (To be specific, at least 50 summits.)
  5. It absolutely had to have a weird part or two that I could design and print out with my new shiny Rostock Max V2 3D Printer.

Design

I settled on the Moxon design pretty quickly, because I thought I could make something up with wire (junk box) and 9mm fibre glass rods (junk box) and shock cord (junk box). Besides, I have already built a Yagi (based on G0KSC's LFA design) and I thought that a Yagi would be hard pressed to match the Moxon in terms of weight, portability and cost. I also ruled out the Hentenna design, because it looked like the design may not work as well with floppy radiating elements. I also had a Hentenna 4NEC2 model that I did back in 2011 and I thought I may return to it if the Moxon design did not fare too well during simulation.


Modelling and Optimization
I calculated the rough dimensions for the reflector, director, short elements and the gap, starting off with a symmetric set-up where the reflector plus its short sides would be an exact mirror image of the driven element.

Next, I modeled the Moxon in 4NEC2, my go-to Antenna Simulator. It is free and it works great. It integrates with other free tools such as GNUPlot and run models through the free NEC2 (Numerical Electromagnetics Code) engine. See the Downloads Section below for the NEC file.

I used 4NEC2's Genetic Algorithm Optimizer to find a solution that maximized gain and minimized VSWR. From memory I think I used a weighting of 50% Gain and 50% VSWR, I put the optimized model through the mill two more times, after I had a look in my junk box and found 4mm thick Green and Yellow insulated wire. Once the optimization was complete, I ran an average gain sanity check and then rounded off the all the fractions of millimeters to end with round numbers for all dimensions. This was the final model that I used to build my 2 meter Moxon. The results from 4NEC looked better than the old model from the Hentenna, so I dropped the Hentenna from the running.

The 3 patterns are for the same antenna at 3 different frequencies: 144, 146 and 148MHz.

*Note that dBi refers to the antenna's gain relative to an imaginary isotropic point source that emits radiation equally in all directions. To compare it to a dipole, subtract 2.15 dBi. In other words the Moxon is predicted to have a gain of about 7.85 dBd (dBd is gain with reference to a dipole. dBd = dBi-2.15 dB).

When I mentioned to Andrew VK1DA that I was busy building a 2 meter Moxon, he asked how it would stack up against a simple 3 element Yagi-Uda. I didn't know, so for a laugh I modeled it in 4NEC2 (and subsequently built it, but more about that later). Here I have included the modeled comparison between the Moxon and the Hentenna's radiation pattern (in elevation/from the side), and as a sneak preview, the Hentenna, Moxon and simple 3 element Yagi on the right.

By running a frequency sweep in 4NEC2, I could get a feel for what the Moxon's VSWR would be across the 2 meter band:

Predicted VSWR looks good, with 144 to 149MHz around 1.5.

Update on 24 April: I made a mistake when entering the diagonal spreader dimensions: they should be 380mm and not 572.5 as I originally had them. Sorry about that. ;-)

Building Tip: The antenna can start of as two pieces of wire, ABCD and EFGH. So measure ABCD and then EFGH, attach their ends to each other with elastic shock cord. Snip the driven element in half and solder in a BNC connector. That is it. Then you need to think about spreading the wire into a rectangular pattern according to the dimensions above. I used old tent poles and a 3D printed hub that slips over another tapered pole.
 

 Building the Antenna

I had the dimensions and all the materials, but was missing one final piece of the puzzle. The central hub that would hold it all together and mount on the Squid Pole Mast, out of the way of the Link Dipole. It needed at least four holes to hold the glass fiber rods that would give it all some stability and it needed to attach to the Squid Pole. I had a look at some of the hubs on The Moxon Project's website but none would do. In the end I knew I had to make some sort of sleeve that slips over the Squid Pole, like the hub of a bicycle, with spokes radiating from the central hub - a bit like what I did to 3D Print a guy rope mount for my Squid Pole.

I settled on a flattish square block that could slip over the pole and had radiating holes to accept the spreaders. I had one last look on the interwebs and stumbled onto this great design for a "central hub" on SOTA Beams' website. I shamelessly adopted their round doughnut shape because it was simpler to combine with radial holes in FreeCAD, and it looked just right - so much better than having a square block. I also got the idea to add a fifth hole for a rod to support the BNC Connector and Coax from their Central Hub's design. I punched the dimensions into FreeCAD and this is how it came out:

I also added Spreader Ends to fit snugly onto the Antenna Wire, printed out the lot and assembled it. All up about 6 hours to design, print and complete.

It came together rather nicely and works a treat. The antenna has some gain (I am not sure how to accurately test real-world gain yet), slips nicely over the Squid Pole and folds up into a tiny bundle of wires and rods which I bind up with elastic bands before they go into the backpack. It also has a really nice and flat VSWR Curve, as can be seen from the MiniVNA output below and it weighs next to nothing.

Measured VSWR (Green Line) is below 1.5 from 140 MHz to 150 MHz.

08 SOTA Activation: One Tree Hill VK1/AC-035



One Tree Hill VK1/AC-035 (18 April 2015)

One Tree Hill is my local SOTA summit and only about 5 km away from me as the crow flies. I wanted to go out for a quick summit activation and get back because I had an idea that I wanted to work out (whenever I rotate the Squid Pole to orient the directional Moxon, my Dipole Antenna would rotate along with it, being tied to the top of the Squid Pole, snagging and winding up - a bit of a hassle. So I had an idea to sort that out, but more about it later.). I therefore thought (but not very deeply...) that my nearest summit would give me a summit activation and some time to work this idea out at home. I completely forgot about the 8.4 Km return walk from Hoskins Street to the Summit and back. What was intended to be a 2 hour affair turned into at least 4.5 hours but it was great...I love One Tree Hill and I have not been up there in a while.

How to Get There

Access to the summit is via a 4.2 Km footpath that starts out at the corner of Hoskins and Hall Streets in Hall. Hoskins street connects to Victoria Street which in turn connects to the Barton Highway.

 The footpath is unsealed but the last hundred meters to the summit has been improved: TAMS installed compacted earth steps to make access easier. There are a few small cattle grids to get over along the way but these have been done really well, most people won't have any hassles to get to the top.

 There is one fork in the path where you should take the left path up the hill. The right path continues on to Forde.

Special Permissions or Arrangements

None required. Access is via the public Canberra Centenary Trail. Please note that this footpath forms part of the Northern Link to Forde (Hall Village to Forde), which  is closed during Total Fire Bans.

Summit Information

One Tree Hill’s summit is 876 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 1 SOTA activation point. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44nu. There is a bush fire lookout on the other side of the fence (on private property). TAMS has installed a nice Canberra Centenary Trail marker and sturdy wood benches.

There is no shelter on the summit and the sun and wind could be a nuisance.

I set up my squid pole against the northern fence, lashing it to a fence pole with bungee cords, running the dipole cords to the gate on the one side and the fence on the other. Plenty of options for set-up.

Contacts Made

Andrew VK1NAM was on Gourock VK2/ST-012 and we had a good summit to summit on 40 meters SSB and 2 meters FM that bagged me an extra 6 points. Thank you Andrew!  I had good contacts with a few regular Chasers in VK1, VK2 and VK3, but experienced some QSB (signal fading) towards the end.

Just before I signed off, I got a call from Andrew VK1DA/VK2UH who proposed that we try 2 meters FM. I switched to the front connector on the FT817 and got a pretty poor signal report from Andrew who was not too far away in Yass. Upon closer inspection I realised that the little 2M Moxon was pointing towards Canberra, and away from Yass.

This, and the horizontal orientation of the Moxon was the reason for the poor signal report. When I had it pointing in the direction of Yass, Andrew's signal report increased from a 5/4 to a 5/8. Although on-air signal reports cannot be treated as scientific measurements, it was interesting to find that by rotating the Moxon through 180 degrees, I could improve the signal report by an apparent 4 S-points (equivalent to at most 24 dB), suggesting that the Moxon has a front to back ratio of at least a few dB.

Pete VK2FPMC joined in and we did a few experiments where I dropped power levels from 5 watt to 2.5 watt, 1 watt and 0.5 watt, attempting each time to make contact to see what effect it had on the QSO (communication). I could read Pete and Andrew on all but 0.5 watt. I think I missed Andrew VK1DA on the 0.5 watt over because he was also experimenting with his handy talkie's antenna orientation at the same time. He later said that he could null out my horizontally polarized signal completely if his HT Antenna was perfectly vertical.

While this was going on, I heard Andrew VK1NAM call me with a "Summit to Summit". He was behind me and I was able to work him with the rear of the Moxon now pointing towards him. We completed the contact and he gave me a 5/1 signal report - not bad for a 90 degree polarization shift and only 1 watt!

In the picture below you can see that Andrew VK1DA/VK2UH was 37Km to my NNW whereas Andrew VK1NAM was 63 Km to my SW.

07 SOTA Activation: Mt. Ainslie VK1/AC-040


Mt. Ainslie VK1/AC-040 (17 April 2015)

There are few hills around Canberra that can compete with the view from Mount Ainslie. It is not the highest but I think you could spot most of the significant landmarks in Canberra from up there. It overlooks the Australian War Memorial and if your eyes travel down ANZAC Parade, you will see Old and New Parliament house on Capital Hill, across Lake Burley Griffin. You also have a line if sight to other nearby SOTA summits including Black Mountain, Mount Stromlo, One Tree Hill, Isaacs Ridge, Tuggeranong Hill, Mount Taylor and neighbouring Mt. Majura.

How to Get There

Access to the summit could be as easy or hard as you like. A nice (mostly paved) footpath takes you from Treloar Crescent, opposite the War Memorial to the summit. It is a steady climb that usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Alternatively you could take Mount Ainslie road to the car park that is about 10 meters below the summit. Mount Ainslie road turns out of Fairbairn Avenue.

None required. Access is via a public road or footpath.

Summit Information

Mount Ainslie's summit is 843 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 1 SOTA activation point. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44nr. The summit is about 10 meters higher than the car park and Mt. Ainslie road that surrounds it. The lookout on the western side is quite the crowd puller so there are always people coming and going.

I set up on what I thought was the highest spot, next to a metal pole that was perfect support for the squid pole. Two bungee cords later and I had a stable mast for the whole activation.

This was my second activation for the day, coming straight after the earlier activation of Mount Stromlo. Andrew VK1NAM was on Spring Hill VK2/ST-036 and we had a good summit to summit that bagged me an extra 4 points. Thank you Andrew!

06 SOTA Activation: Mt. Stromlo VK1/AC-043


Mt. Stromlo VK1/AC-043 (17 April 2015)

I had a few days of leave up my sleeve and decided to go for a few activations. Mount Stromlo is the site of the ANU's Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics which lost all their telescopes in the 2003 Canberra bush fire. A new main building and telescopes have since been put up. Mount Stromlo is also a part of the Mount Stromlo Forest Park, used for mountain biking and other outdoor sports.

Mount Stromlo Rd. becomes Oddie Way, which terminates at this car park.

Taking advice from Andrew VK1DA about RF noise at the Trig Point, I walked further up the hill, past the Trig Point to the north, first going down a footpath and then up the other side on a dirt road. There I found a perfect spot to set-up.

This was only my second solo activation but I was already finding a good, efficient unpacking and set-up rhythm. I could see a water pipe sticking up out of the ground but decided not to use it as anchor point for the squid pole. Instead I wanted to try a 3D-printed guy rope sleeve that slips over the squid pole, coming to a rest just above the junction between the lowest and second telescopic segment. Have a look at the red object around the squid pole in the picture below. I originally wanted to have the guy set-up slightly higher, around 2 or 3 meters from the ground but heard from Andrew VK1DA that this lower mounting point works really well for Andrew VK1NAM. I tried it and I like it. To simplify setting up the pole, ideally one would want the squid pole inserted into a fishing rod holder, or something that fixes the base to one spot.  I have come across the perfect rod holders from K-Mart, for $5.

On the squid pole, I had the 40 meter link dipole antenna at the top and the 2 meter Fold-up Moxon mounted horizontally about 4 meter from the ground. The Moxon's red central doughnut slips over the squid pole and slides all the way down until the doughnut's inner diameter matches the squid pole's outer diameter.

The link dipole is simply two pieces of wire, each one quarter wave length of the 40 meter band. In other words, they are approximately 10 meters apiece, and jointly 20 meters long. The wires have been chopped up into 5 pieces, each piece terminated in a RCA plug. By connecting all the plugs, I have a dipole antenna that is resonant on 40 meters (7.1 MHz). By decoupling the outer two RCA plugs, I have an antenna that is resonant on the 20 meter band, and so on, all they way up to the 6 meter band. To switch frequencies, all I need to do is to pull the squid pole down and change the configuration of connected RCA plugs. This takes no more than 2-3 minutes.

The dipole's two wire elements (with RCA plugs) are joined in the middle, not directly to each other, but to a BNC Antenna connector, so that the one connects to the centre conductor of the BNC connector and the other to the outer conductor.

The dipole and Moxon are fed by stock RG58 50Ohm coaxial cable, terminated in BNC connectors.

How to Get There

Access to the summit is pretty straightforward. Mount Stromlo Road turns out of Cotter Road and can be followed to to a car park that is about 50 meters from the summit.

None required. Access is via a public road, but according to the VKSOTA site, the road to the summit is closed at night. Reference: VKSOTA.

Summit Information

Mount Stromlo’s summit is 782 meters above mean sea level and it is worth 1 SOTA activation point. Its Maidenhead locator is QF44mq. The summit is open with great views all round. There are a few Mountain Bike tracks, so take care when you set up that you don't run your dipole or guy ropes across a track. The summit is exposed so the wind and sun can be a nuisance.

I finally settled my feud with Rucksack Radio Tool and it logged me into Sotawatch at last, so I could spot myself. In fairness though, I was using the wrong username all the time. My bad, not RRTs!

It was a great start to the morning, with 30+ contacts. This was off course helped along by the activation time that coincided with the UTC rollover from 8 to 9 April, allowing Chasers to gain points for the summit on the 8th and the 9th of April.
